SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION

WHAT ARE SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION?

  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions
  • Fatigue and decrease energy
  • feelings of guilt, worthless, and/or helplessness
  • feelings of hopelessness and/or pessimism
  • insomnia, early morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping
  • irritability, restlessness
  • loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable, including sex
  • overeating or appetite loss
  • persistent aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment
  • persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" feelings
  • thoughts of suicide attempts
WARNING SIGNS OF SUICIDE INCLUDE:
  • TALKING ABOUT KILLING OR HARMING ONE'S SELF
  • expressing strong feelings of hopelessness or being trapped
  • an unusual preoccupation with death or dying
  • acting recklessly, as if they have a death wish (e.g. speeding through red lights)
  • calling or visiting people to say goodbye
  • getting affairs in order (giving away proved possessions, tying up loose ends.)
  • saying things like "everyone would be better off without me" or "I want out"
  • A sudden switch from being extremely depressed to acting calm and happy
depression carries a high risk of suicide.anybody who expresses suicidal thoughts or intentions should be taken very, very seriously. Do not hesitate to call your local suicide hotline immediately. call 1800-784-2433 or 1-800-273-8255 or the deaf hotline at 1-800-799-4889
